Introduction.

I have long been fascinated by musical instrument, especially those with strings. Guitar seemed to be a natural outlet for this obsession. I tend to be drawn to the obscure in all of my interests and in the realm of musical instruments this hold true as well.

Among my favorites are guitars mass produced for department store and catalog sales. These are often made of experimental material for musicals instruments, such as Masonite, fiberglass, aluminum, vinyl and inexpensive woods such as poplar or even pine. Despite of (or perhaps because of) these modest beginnings these guitars and basses tend to have tonal qualities not possessed by higher end models.

Guitars of this ilk were sold under many names. Often the same models would be offered under several different brands.

Some of the brands that most interest me are Danelectro, Silvertone, Harmony, Airline, Supro, and Coral.

Foremost in this galaxy of discount guitars are Danelectros. Made by Nathan Daniel from 1954-1969 originally to supple Sears with Silvertone models, he also sold the many of the same models under the Danelectro brand and later the Coral label. See this great web site for many detail on the history, models and life of these amazing guitars. Also some reissues and new guitars inspired by the Danelectros are available there.
