My Allohistory Denmark:

hile the Danish seem to have dropped off the world in real history. This seems to have been a result of the dominance of the seas by Britain and the loss of European land power as a result of the Napoleonic wars. I am envisioning a world with a much less powerful Britain and this allows otherwise small powers to grow much greater.

Almost a third of the nation's population was ethnic Germans. Holstein and Lauenburg were members of the German Confederation, while Schleswig was ethnically divided. The crucial questions of a single or dual ethnic state and the affiliation of Schleswig and the other ethnically mixed territories became acute in 1848 when pro-German Schleswig-Holsteiners demanded a liberal constitution and the incorporation of Schleswig in the German Confederation.

This precipitated the Three Years' War with Danes opposed by a self declared independent Schleswig-Holstein with off and on Prussian support. The conflict was both hard fought and bloody for all parties. It was resolved by the withdrawal of Prussian participation. This was brought about primarily by pressure from Russia as the Danes and Russians grew towards a closer alliance. Unrest continues below the surface, but many political reforms were enacted to appease the ethnic German minority. The war did see the introduction of a new weapon that would play a critical role in the wars to come, the "Espingol".

The espingol was invented by Danish army engineering officer, Andreas Anthon Frederik Schumacher, as an offshoot of his work on rockets.
