Back End, back to the Library of the New World

The conservative viceroy attempted to excluded all non-catholics from entry into the colony, but the allure of gold proved so great the soon it was not uncommon to hear Gaelic, French, Russian, German and even English on the streets of San Francisco. In addition to the voluntary migration, the Russian Alaska Company(RAC) soon established a trade in Chinese contract workers to man the mines and slues. In total, this constituted one of the largest human migrations in history. More then half-million people from around the world descended upon New Spain in search of instant wealth. The annual gold production reach a high of $81 million, and these funds bolstered the expansionist goals of the administration of General Leopoldo O'Donnell. With economic and logistical base of New Spain, O'Donnell planed to regain the greater portion of the new world which had been lost to her during the wars of independence which had not been fully opposed at the time, do to the chaos of the European wars of Napoleon I. Additionally, O'Donnell did not want Spain to be left behind in the rush to claim the wealth of Africa and Asia. Being well aware of the value of New Spain in his ambitious, O'Donnell began to ramp up pressure on the viceroy to assure that the newly cosmopolitan population of New Spain would continue to be so productive.

As a consequence, a number of growlingly liberal reforms were enacted by the compliant viceroy. Feeling crowed out of there own colony, the conservatives of New Spain begun to seek refuge once again in Mexico, were many still had substantial land holdings. In Mexico at least Spanish was still the prominent language and the cultural tradition held so dear by the conservatives were still widely excepted. The tremendous influx of non Spaniards into New Spain had made this familiarity of culture an irresistible draw. Sadly for the conservatives the ensuing 40 years of liberal rule in Mexico had established a culture of its own.
